You kill the lights, load a black screen, and one corner is glowing. Now you have to decide whether that is a defect worth sending the monitor back for, or the normal behavior of the panel you just bought. Most guides stop at telling the two apart. This one covers what happens after you name it: which channel to use, what the person reading your claim is grading against, and how much time you have left.
Start by naming what you see
The two separate on one property, which is whether the bright area depends on where your eyes are. Watch it while you shift in your chair. Glow is an angle effect, so it moves when you do and softens once you face the screen head on. A leak sits in the assembly, so it holds its place no matter where you sit.
That difference decides which channel is open to you later. No maker classes glow as a fault, so a warranty claim built on it goes nowhere. A leak is a build problem, and a build problem is something you can put in a ticket.
The backlight bleed test puts the black and near black fills on screen and runs a countdown while your eyes adapt, which is the step nearly everyone skips. Walk in from a lit kitchen and your eyes need that countdown before faint edge light registers at all. A verdict reached ten seconds in is a verdict on your eyes, not on the panel.
Expect to find both at once. A corner can carry angle dependent haze with a defined patch sitting inside it, and only the patch is worth a claim.
The two clocks you are actually on
Two separate rights sit behind that monitor, and they work nothing alike.
The first is the seller return window. Inside it you prove nothing. You don’t need the word defect, a photo, or anyone’s agreement. You send the monitor back because you no longer want it. The closing date is in your order history or on the receipt, and it is usually measured in weeks.
The second is the manufacturer warranty, which normally runs a year or more. It covers faults, so here you have to establish one, and that is where bleed gets awkward. Pixel defects have a published standard behind them, which means a pixel claim can be settled by counting. Nothing plays that role for light leaks. No class, no count, no figure on a spec sheet. Neither side of the ticket can be objectively right, so the grader reads your photo and measures it against the panels that cross their desk all week.
These are not two shots at the same thing. The first is a decision you control. The second is an argument you can lose. Find both dates tonight, before you spend three more evenings staring at that corner, because deliberating is what quietly moves people out of the easy channel and into the hard one.
A bar you can apply tonight
Every guide lands on the same advice, which is to send it back if it bothers you. That fails the person asking, because at midnight in a dark room everything bothers you. Use two conditions instead, and require both.
Start with what the fills mean. Absolute black reveals the most and matches the least, since almost nothing you watch is ever that dark. One and two percent gray is the honest test, because that is the neighborhood real footage lives in once a scene goes dark. A patch that has faded out by two percent has no life outside a test pattern.
Then it has to reach you during content you didn’t pick in order to expose it. Load something you were going to watch anyway, sit where you normally sit, keep the brightness you normally use, and see whether your eye goes to that corner on its own. The question is not whether you can find the patch. It is whether the patch finds you.
Clear both and you have a real reason to send the monitor back. Clear one, and you are inside the range most panels at that price ship in.
Your photo is the whole claim
Past the return window your case is a photograph, and your phone will work against you. Point it at a black screen in the dark and it does the opposite of what you need. It meters for all that darkness, drags the shutter open, and hands back a frame holding far more light than you ever saw. Support desks get those pictures every day, which is precisely why they discount them.
Shoot it so it survives the person on the other end:
- Lock a short exposure rather than letting auto metering chew on a black field. A frame close to what you saw beats a dramatic one.
- Shoot from your seat, not from twenty centimeters away. The claim is about how the monitor behaves in use, not under inspection.
- Keep the whole screen and the bezel in frame. A cropped corner has no scale and nothing to compare against.
- Add a second frame of the real case, one dark scene where the patch actually intrudes, next to the black field shot.
- Write down the conditions: brightness setting, room lighting, model, purchase date. Send them with the images.
Two honest photos and four lines of conditions read like somebody who tested carefully. One blown out black frame reads like every other ticket in the queue.
An exchange is another draw, not a repair
A replacement fixes nothing by design. Nothing about the unit you send back gets corrected, and nothing about the one you receive was built to be better. You are drawing a second sample from a line where frame pressure already varies between units. You might land better, you might land worse, and on a model with a reputation for it you can spend two shipments to arrive where you started.
That changes the math on a borderline panel. If your patch clears both conditions above, swap it. If it only exists on pure black in a blacked out room, the next one will most likely look the same. When the replacement does arrive, run the full monitor checklist on it the day it lands, while its own return window is still wide open.
If the window already closed
You still have moves. Start with pressure, since that is where bleed comes from and it is the one cause you can reach. Shipping, a drop, and a hard mounted arm all load the frame unevenly, so a mount that went on tight is worth backing off before you accept the panel as it is. Then let the panel settle. A cold chassis and a warm one do not hold the frame identically, so a borderline patch deserves a second look after twenty minutes of use, and another one a few weeks later.
Then file, with photos taken the way above, and read the reply for what it is. Some desks accept a clear leak inside the first year with little friction. Others answer that it falls within tolerance, and no document exists for you to hold up against that. Not knowing which kind you have is the reason to test on day one instead of in month three.
The panel lottery is real, and it argues for deciding quickly rather than for accepting a defect or hunting a perfect black. Judge the patch against those two conditions, act inside the earlier of your two dates, and this costs you one evening instead of a month of second guessing.
